Hato Caves
Not far from Hato International Airport, the Hato Caves are the goal of an interesting excursion. The caves have been formed under water millions of years ago.
When Curaçao came into existance, the caves also arose from the sea.Through the ages the caves served as dwellings for the Arawak people and as a shelter for runaway slaves. To get to the entrance one has to overcome the hurdle of a 49-steps staiway, carved from the rock. The caves take up 4,900 square meters and have broad, well-lighted hiking paths. Underground rivers, waterfalls, old rockpaintings, a forest of stalagmites and stalagtites and a colony of rare longnosed bats are further attractions to lure visitors.
The caves can be visited Tuesdays through Sundays between 10:00 and 17:00 hrs. On the hour one can take part in a guided tour, the last of which starts at 16:00 hrs. More information you will find in the vacation villa.
